Every Skincare Program Is Personalized, Because There Are No One-Size-Fits-All Solutions in Cosmetology

In modern cosmetology, mastering treatment techniques is no longer enough. A true professional is constantly learning, works exclusively with evidence-based methods, takes a comprehensive approach to assessing the condition of the skin and the patient’s overall health, and helps people not only enhance their appearance but also preserve their natural beauty, youthfulness, and confidence. Diana Sikirynska is a licensed cosmetologist in the United States, PhD, Candidate of Medical Sciences, and a specialist in aesthetic cosmetology and trichology. After moving to the United States, she successfully validated her professional qualifications, adapted to the American healthcare system, and built a career that is now trusted by dozens of clients.

Diana, today you work as a licensed cosmetologist in the United States and hold a PhD. Tell us how your professional journey began. What initially drew you to aesthetic cosmetology?

My professional journey has always been closely connected to medicine. I graduated with honors from Ternopil State Medical University and earned a Candidate of Medical Sciences degree specializing in Anesthesiology. Even in Ukraine, cosmetology was much more than an additional professional activity for me; it was a true passion. I worked in aesthetic medicine, performed various procedures, continuously studied, and realized that this field allowed me to combine medical expertise, aesthetics, and meaningful communication with people. Today, I am motivated by the opportunity to help women not only look better but also feel more confident. The most rewarding thing for me is seeing how, after receiving the right treatment or skincare plan, a person begins to smile more, look at themselves differently, and experience a greater sense of inner harmony.

For many professionals, moving to the United States means having to start almost from scratch. What was this journey like for you?

Moving to the United States truly marked the beginning of a new professional chapter for me. I arrived here in 2022 and initially planned to stay for only a few months. However, life had other plans, and I had to rebuild my career practically from the ground up. First, I began studying the requirements of the American system in order to work legally in my profession. I completed the necessary education, prepared for the licensing examination in English, successfully passed it, and obtained the right to work as a cosmetologist in the United States. At the same time, I continued to expand my qualifications by attending professional conferences, educational programs, and master classes, because cosmetology is a field that develops extremely quickly. The most difficult part was not obtaining the license but rebuilding people's trust. When you move to a new country, no one knows you yet, so your reputation has to be built through consistent work, responsibility, and results.

You have now been working in the American beauty industry for several years. How does the culture of self-care in the United States differ from what you were familiar with before?

Today, most of my clients are Ukrainian women who have moved to the United States, so I can say that their attitude toward self-care has changed very little. They continue to pay close attention to their appearance, visit cosmetologists regularly, take an interest in modern treatments, and maintain their skincare routines at home. American women also place great importance on beauty, although their approaches can sometimes differ. Overall, I believe that regardless of the country, people are becoming increasingly aware of the value of prevention and proper care rather than waiting until existing problems become more serious. That is why I always begin not with a procedure but with a detailed consultation, an assessment of the skin, and an understanding of the person's lifestyle. It is important to me not simply to perform a particular treatment, but to identify the underlying cause of a problem, develop an individualized care plan, and help the client achieve a long-lasting, natural result. In my opinion, this comprehensive approach is one of the defining trends in modern aesthetic medicine.

Your practice currently offers a wide range of treatments. How do you develop an individualized plan for each client?

I always say that quality cosmetology begins not with a procedure but with a consultation. It is very important for me to first get to know the person and have a detailed conversation about their concerns, lifestyle, previous experiences, and expectations. I always take a comprehensive medical history, including previous illnesses, allergic reactions, chronic conditions, cosmetic procedures they have undergone in the past, and other factors that may affect the condition of their skin. I never look at just one problem; I always try to see the bigger picture. Only after a comprehensive assessment do I develop an individualized treatment or skincare plan, because every body is different and there are no one-size-fits-all solutions in cosmetology. For me, the priority is not a quick effect but a safe, predictable, and long-lasting result. That is why every skincare program is created specifically for the individual and their unique needs.

Diana, your professional experience in cosmetology is complemented by a scientific background and a PhD. Why did you decide not to limit yourself to practical work but to deepen your knowledge at a scientific level?

It has always been important to me not simply to know how a particular method works, but to understand why it works. I consciously chose the path of science and defended my dissertation, earning a Candidate of Medical Sciences degree specializing in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care. Scientific work taught me to think more broadly, analyze cause-and-effect relationships, and rely exclusively on verified facts. In addition, I taught at Ternopil State Medical University for many years, which was another important stage in my professional development. Teaching requires you to continue learning yourself, organize your knowledge, and keep up with current research. All of this helps me today to be not simply a cosmetologist but a physician who understands the processes taking place within the human body. A strong scientific foundation allows me to make well-informed decisions and offer clients the most effective and safe methods.

Hair and scalp health is another important area of your work. Why did you decide to develop this specialization, and when did you realize that hair-related concerns require the same comprehensive and professional approach as facial skin concerns?

Working with hair and scalp health became a natural continuation of my professional development. In recent years, I increasingly noticed how many women are concerned about these issues, particularly those who have experienced relocation, significant stress, or difficult life circumstances. Stress is one of the major factors that can disrupt many processes in the body, and hair often responds very quickly to these changes. Hair loss, brittleness, reduced density, or a deterioration in scalp health are not simply cosmetic concerns; they can be signals that require a comprehensive assessment. I have always been interested not in temporarily eliminating symptoms but in finding the underlying cause. That is why I began studying trichology in greater depth, so that I could help my clients in a more professional and comprehensive way. Today, I am convinced that hair health requires the same individualized approach as facial skin health.

Diana, how do you envision the next stage of your professional development in the United States? What goals inspire you to keep moving forward?

Today, my biggest professional dream is to create my own modern beauty space in the United States where women can receive comprehensive care under one roof. I envision it not simply as a cosmetology studio but as a multifunctional salon bringing together highly qualified specialists from different areas: cosmetologists, nail and pedicure professionals, massage therapists, trichologists, and other beauty industry experts. I want every woman who walks through the doors of this space to feel comfortable, have the opportunity to take care of herself, save time, and receive the highest level of service. It is very important to me to create an atmosphere of trust, care, and professionalism where people come not only for treatments but also for a sense of inner comfort and confidence. I believe that beauty begins with self-love, and the role of a specialist is to help enhance and preserve that beauty. I continue to study, grow, and refine my skills because I believe that great goals are achieved through consistent daily work. And I sincerely hope that within the next few years, this dream will become a reality.
